Our Approach

Our work spans the pipeline into tech opportunities, supporting young people in secondary school to gain the skills, qualifications and knowledge to set them up for success, as well as employability – helping graduates and those without higher education to forge high-quality careers in the sector.

We focus on:

  • STEM as a bedrock for developing important analytical skills,

  • proficiency in the use and deployment of AI, and

  • development of essential skills (such as creative thinking, entrepreneurialism and problem solving) which are at the forefront of how humans work with AI.

Our criteria

We support education and employment programmes in the UK, Europe and North America that widen the pipeline of talent into tech-enabled opportunities. We look for programmes which:

  1. Aim to improve at least one of our core objectives: a) increased aspirations towards STEM and tech pathways; b) increased attainment in STEM / tech-relevant qualifications and training; c) increased employment rates and progression in tech jobs.

  2. Are informed by evidence and have clear metrics to track outcomes and assess impact.

  3. Support individuals from secondary school through to adults who are underrepresented – especially by gender, ethnicity and income level.

  4. Are run by expert organisations committed to transparency, growth & learning, and open to independent evaluation.

  5. Can effectively use substantial funding to grow a clearly defined, discrete programme offering intensive support to participants.

  6. Are looking for a close, collaborative partner – and would benefit from the expertise and networks of the Foundation, Hg and its partners.

  7. Are forward-looking, agile and responsive – actively monitoring how AI is changing education and the labour market and adapting what they deliver so participants build skills that stay relevant.

  8. We can support for the long-term and have the potential to scale.
