The University Maths Schools Network (U-Maths) was created in 2023 to strengthen the community of Maths Schools and provide a channel for best practise sharing across the network.
University Maths Schools are 16-19 state schools in the UK, aiming to immerse students in the challenge and opportunities of Maths and related subjects. They are founded by and closely linked to leading universities and offer a high-quality specialist STEM curriculum. They are intended to be engines of social mobility, working with students from underrepresented groups to widen participation in high-quality STEM degrees and careers.
Following a pilot in the 2024/25 academic year, The Hg Foundation are continuing to support U-Maths’ work for a further two years, to help ensure their student body is more reflective of the communities they are in. The programme features a range of activities including: application support for low-income students; outreach activities with local schools; expansion of summer schools for girls; reviewing and improving admissions processes; growing the U-Maths Girls Network to support a sense of belonging.
U-Maths are also collaborating with upReach, supporting Maths School alumni from underrepresented backgrounds to access tech career pathways, through The Hg Foundation-funded Tech500 Programme.
